An Anal Dilator Therapy Kit contains a hollow anal plug and a spreader that will stretch your anus and make it more comfortable to have anal intercourse. The kits come in three different sizes from small to large and should be purchased according to your needs.
You’ll start your anal dilator therapy using the hollow anal plug alone. Then insert the spreader and slowly open it. Over time you will feel more comfortable. Increase the size of the anal plug until you reach the desired size.
About Anal Dilator Therapy
Anal dilator therapy will help you stretch your anus to take a bigger penis. It can also help keep your anus elastic. These things will help:
- Your healthcare provider do a full prostate exam.
- Make prostate exams and anal penetration more comfortable.
The length of time you’ll need to do anal dilator therapy depends on many things. You can do it for as long as you need to. Talk with your healthcare provider about the length of time that’s right for you.
How to do Anal Dilator Therapy
Find a time and a quiet place where you can be alone. Try to pick a comfortable space where you feel relaxed, such as your bedroom. Relax your pelvic floor muscles and take some deep breaths before you start. If you aren’t sure which muscles are your pelvic floor muscles, read the resource Pelvic Floor Muscle (Kegel) Exercises for Men to Improve Sexual Health.
Start by getting into a comfortable position.
- Lie on your back with your feet flat on the bed or couch and your knees slightly bent.
- Spread your legs so they’re shoulder-width apart. If you have trouble doing this, you can place pillows under your knees for support.
- Make sure you can easily touch the opening of your anus with your hand. Use a hand mirror to see your anal opening if you need to.
Once you’re comfortable, take some slow, deep breaths into your belly. You can also practice Kegel exercises (squeezing and relaxing your pelvic floor muscles). These things can help relax your pelvic floor muscles and make it easier to insert the hollow anal plug. If you aren’t sure how to do Kegel exercises, read the resource Pelvic Floor Muscle (Kegel) Exercises for Men to Improve Sexual Health.
Using your anal dilator
Using an anal dilator is simple. It shouldn’t cause any pain if you do it slowly and gently. It should take about 10 to 15 minutes.
Start with the hollow anal plug your purchased. The plug should feel snug but not painful. If you don’t feel any pressure when you insert the plug, you might need to use a larger size. Read the section “Increasing your plug size” for more information.
- Apply a water-based lubricant (such as Astroglide®) to the plug and the opening of your anus. This will help the plug slide into your anus more easily. For even greater comfort, try a Desensitizing Anal Lube.
- Don’t use petroleum jelly (Vaseline®). It can cause irritation.
- Avoid using oil and silicone-based lubricants. They don’t wash off the dilator easily.
- Using gentle pressure, slowly insert the round end of the hollow anal plug into your anus.
- Always insert it straight toward your spine (backbone) or at a slightly downward angle, away from your prostate .
- After you have the plug inside, insert the spreader and begin opening it slowly until you feel slight discomfort or muscle tension, then stop. This helps stretch the opening of your anus. Never use force. Stop if you feel pain.
- Do a set of Kegel exercises. This will help you relax your pelvic floor muscles and open the dilator a little further.
- Your anus will narrow when you contract your pelvic floor muscles and open slightly when you relax them. It may be easier to open the dilator further when you’re relaxing your muscles.
- If it’s still hard to open the dilator after doing Kegel exercises, try taking some deep breaths. Then, refocus on relaxing your pelvic floor muscles and try to open the dilator a little further.
- It may be helpful to work with more than one size plug. For example, you can start with a small plug and move up in size quickly.
- Don’t worry if you can’t open the dilator completely. Over time, you may be able to get the dilator to open a little further.
- Take the dilator out of your anus.
Increasing your dilator size
The goal of anal dilator therapy is to increase the size of your anus slowly. When you can insert one size of a hollow anal plug completely into your anus without any discomfort, you should start using the next size up. The goal is to insert the largest size dilator without any discomfort, if possible. Increasing the size over time will help you have more comfortable anal sex.
